Today is the launch of PS4’s next major system update codenamed “Musashi” which updates some social features and adds remote play for both PC and Mac users. Some of the new social features include being able to appear offline, choose to be notified when a friend is online, create a scheduled event to play online with your friends, and to be able to see what members of a party are playing in order to jump directly into other games with them. Playstation has outlined more details on their blog

PS4 3.5 Update includes updated social features!

but let’s get down to the meat and potatoes…remote play!

Remote Play allows a PS4 owner to play games, streamed over Wi-Fi on PC or Mac using the remote play software, a PS4 and a wired PS4 controller. You don’t need to be on the same network for it to work but it’s recommended. You can adjust video quality and frame rate settings but if you care enough to even use this setting then you’ll probably want the most optimal experience. Hardwiring your PS4 at home and the device your streaming to is probably the ideal situation if you’re going to be streaming elsewhere but at least hardwiring the PS4 is strongly recommended.

Remote Play on PC / Mac is compatible with the following system software:

  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows 10 or later
  • OS X 10.10
  • OS X 10.11

You’ll be able to select from the following resolution and frame rate options, depending on your Internet bandwidth.

  • Resolution options: 360p, 540p, 720p (Default: 540p)
  • Frame rate : Standard (30fps), High (60fps) (Default: Standard)

I haven’t tested it myself but we’ll keep you posted on any issues we come across!
